2005 Meeting Review

March Meeting

Held at Roc & Pat's home in Ware, Ma

Speaker:

Dr. Joerg Mayer, DVM

Tufts Veterinary University

After Joerg graduated from the Veterinary University in Budapest/Hungary, he completed an internship in zoological medicine at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence RI.  At the end of the internship Dr Mayer joined a research team to go into the cloud forest of Papua New Guinea to study wild and captive Tree Kangaroos for 2 mos.  Dr Mayer received a M. Sc. degree in Wild Animal Health from the Royal Veterinary College and the zoological society of London before he started in his current position as the Director of Exotic Service at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.

 

         

 

    

    

 

      

  

 

April Meeting

Held at Ed & Chris's home in Agawam

Speaker:

Bruce Gibbs, Water Quality

Bruce is one of our members who has had koi since he was a young boy.  He will discuss water quality & go thru the nitrogen cycle and explain the different aspects of the various chemicals that make up "water".  Like PH< Ammonia, Nitrates, & Nitrites.  And why it is so important to the health of all your pond inhabitants.

June Meeting

Meeting was held at Gail & Cliff's home in So Hadley

Ruth McCormic (Triple Brook Farm)

Subject:

Turn your yard into a traditional Japanese garden.  Ruth will demonstrate how to grow bamboo around the house and the varieties that are New England hardy.

 

   

  

   

 

 

 

 

 

July Meeting

This Meeting was held at Chris & Jim's home in Chicopee

The meeting was held discuss & finalize plans for the upcoming 1st Annual Water Garden & Ornamental Fish Show to be held Aug 6th & 7th at the 3 County Fairgrounds in Northampton

It rained & unfortunately there were no pictures taken

 

Aug Meeting

Meeting was held at Joan & Jon's home in So Hadley

Subject:

Water Plants - You may think you know a lot about growing water plants until you listen to this guy.  Rob has been growing & selling water plants from one of the largest wholesale / retail businesses in Ct

   

 

 

Sept Meeting

Meeting to be held at Rudy & Sandi Lysick's home in Chicopee

Speaker:  Dick Blase, Pepperell, MA

Subject:  Easy to use innovative items

Dick brought a bag full of different items he uses in his ponds.  He explained each & every one of them.  How to make them & what their function was.  He answered several questions & everyone learned how easy it is to create & build your own inexpensive systems.

Oct Meeting

Meeting to be held at Five Star Gardens in Springfield

Speaker:  Lenny (Five Star)

Subject:  Working with rock

From their beautiful Goshen stonewalls to their handsome paved walkways, Five Star Gardens have long been recognized as the masters in this area.  Any one who has ever wanted to work in stone, here is the meeting to attend.  the folks a five Star Gardens will share with us some of the techniques, tools & materials used to build these beautiful walls.

  

  

 

Nov Meeting

Meeting was held at Jim & Deresa Helms home in Southampton

Speaker:  Jim

Subject:  Winterizing your pond

Since Deresa was away (playing solder in Alabama) Jim talked about the various do's & don'ts about winterizing your pond.  Cleaning out the debris and how far down to cut off each of your plants.  He also discussed the pros & cons for either keeping it running thru the winter or turning it off & adding a heater and/or air stones.  Where they should be placed, etc.  Jim answered several questions & people shared their experiences.  As usual we all learned from each other.
